Holidays in China & The Yangtze River
In June 2003, China's amazing Three Gorges Dam began
generating power, heralding a new era in the colourful
history of the mighty Yangtze River. This momentous
event makes this year the perfect time to visit this
breathtakingly beautiful part of the world, either
to see the area before the dam starts working, or to
experience the unique spectacle of this vast manmade
wonder in operation. As parts of the landscape are
submerged, new sightseeing opportunities will be created,
with the possibility for those taking a boat trip on
the river to travel further up the narrow Shennong
tributary by sampan.

Fengdu, The 'City of the Devil'
Rather than detracting from the scenery, the new dam is likely to enhance some of its interest, certainly in the short term. Water levels are not due to rise to the maximum until 2009. Until then, although certain parts of the landscape will become submerged, in other places on the upper reaches the views will become even more picturesque and accessible. For example, the new river levels will create an eye-catching carpet of mists below mountain heritage sites such as Fengdu, the 'City of the Devil', the Jade Seal Hill and the White Emperor City. In addition, the shortened path from the riverbank to Goddess Peak will offer visitors a better and more accessible view of the mountain.
The Three Gorges Dam
The Three Gorges Dam is one of the biggest construction
projects the world has ever seen and, at around US$25
billion, one of the most expensive too. One and a
half miles wide and over 600 feet high, the dam will
create a reservoir hundreds of feet deep and nearly
400 miles long. The dam's 18.2 million kilowatts
of capacity are expected to generate as much electricity
as 18 nuclear power plants.
in focus
Known as the 'Golden Waterway', the Yangtze River, or the 'Changjiang River' ('Long River'), as the Chinese call it, stretches thousands of miles across the country, finally flowing into the East China Sea. The most visually stunning section of the river is that known as the 'Sanxia' or 'Three Gorges', Chutang, Wushan and Xiling, where towering cliffs rise hundreds of feet from the river's edge.
Just like its American counterpart, the Hoover Dam, the Three Gorges Dam looks set to become as popular a tourist attraction as the wonderful natural landmarks that surround it. As if there weren't enough reasons to plan a trip of a lifetime to China, now there's one more.
