Across the Marmara Sea we find Gallipoli, an ancient land with more than a touch of the African to it, where we find the intricate Anzac cemetery, before heading on to one of Turkey’s most famous cities, Homer’s legendary Troy. After exploring the sights of this historical region, set off to the Bay of Edremit where you can gaze upon the enchanting blue mountains of the island of Lesbos. Once here, take the time to stroll through the lush forestry of pine and valonia oak in the Karsiyaka district that wonderfully offsets the rustic structures of the area.

Moving onwards, there’s the chance to bathe on the white sun soaked sands of the beaches of the ancient towns of Ephesus and Priene, before maybe taking a look at the Virgin Mary House, a tourist favourite.

Onward to Aydin and we find the area known as the ‘Greek Meander’, the most fertile land in Turkey. Along the way there is the chance to stop at the ancient site of Aphrodisias, then Denizli to see the extraordinary sights of the Cotton Castle and the nearby cascading waterfalls of Pamukkale.

If you have an interest in natural beauty, you will be enchanted by the glistening Lake Acigol in Cay, as well as the districts flourishing cherry gardens and awesome mountain scenery which adjoins to the neighbouring city of Konya. Once you have taken in these breathtaking views, make your way over to Aksaray, stopping at the Agzikarahan ‘Caravenserai’, where you will encounter an array of stunning churches and chapels carved into the rock.

Further natural wonderment can be seen in Cappadocia. This natural amphitheatre bounded by almost vertical cliffs is the home to many ancient chambers and porticos, believed to have been a place of shelter for Christians fleeing Roman persecution.

Now for your journey to Ankara, Turkey’s capital, where you can submerge yourself in an excursion to the museum of Anatolian Civilisations and Ankara Mausoleum of Ataturk, two venues that highlight Turkey’s glorious religious and political history. From here, travel on to Bursa to the ancient kingdom of Phryge to Gordion, where legend has it that Alexander the Great cut the proverbial knot. One of Turkey’s most important archaeological sites, here you will find the tomb of King Midas’, a simply magnificent sight that has to be seen, before heading on to the Olympus of Mysia, where an overpowering mosque and covered bazaar await, offering patrons the chance to purchase some fine silks, copperware, woodwork and fresh fruit, vegetables, meats and spices – a truly authentic Turkish affair!

If you feel you have had enough exploration and would prefer a little relaxation, we suggest you head on over to the shores of the Sea of Marmara via Yalova, where you can soothe away your troubles on the golden beaches, before sitting down to a traditional Turkish meal, entertained by street performers and belly dancers. If, however, you still feel the urge to explore, venture to the ancient Roman Hippodrome and Blue Mosque, two venues that further emphasise Turkey’s historical religious importance. Back in Istanbul, take the opportunity to bargain and barter with market – stall holders and pedlars for that perfect souvenir gift that will keep in mind forever your fantastic time in this most vibrant and religiously significant of countries.
