Referred to by travellers as the ‘Venice of the East’ for its intricate architecture and network of canals, Bangkok is home to many a religious and historic monument, a bustling modern shopping culture and friendly faces wherever you turn.
Many exhilarating days sightseeing lie ahead, as you take a wander through this enchanting land, stopping to examine such sights as the splendid Wat Trimitr temple and its ornate accompanying solid gold Buddha and Wat Po, the venue for the gigantic reclining Buddha statue. Continuing the Buddha theme, there is the chance to visit the Grand Palace, and the spectacular Temple of the Emerald Buddha, a truly religious experience.
Away from the sights there is the chance to indulge in some local delicacies, all of which can be purchased from the world famous floating market of Damnoen Saduak, where traders sell exotic fruit and vegetables, as well as intricate silks and toys from their boats in almost surreal surroundings – boats pack the canals side – by – side, selling goods in the same manor as you would find from a regular market – each boat seems to have it’s specialist items, making searching for that ideal souvenir that little bit easier.
Returning to the main city, take the time to visit Phra Pathom Chedi, the world’s tallest Buddhist pagoda, before heading to the dazzlingly beautiful Rose Garden, which not only presents you with an array of beautiful flora and fauna, but also shows that reflect Thai culture, including the famous fingernail dance, sword fighting and an exhibition of the martial art of Thai Boxing.
After all the excitement, take the time to rest and enjoy some authentic cuisine such as noodles and Thai green curry in one of Bangkok’s many traditional restaurants.
