Moving from wildlife to ancient human traditions and civilisation, the Independent Kingdom of Swaziland, bordering South Africa, makes for an intriguing insight into age old African traditions, as well as its superb crafts industry, illustrated in the woodwork and candles that can be purchased here, ideal souvenirs even at this early stage of your expedition.

Upon re – entering South Africa, there is the chance to take in yet more fabulous wildlife in Hluhluwe, renowned for its Rhino Park and the Itala Game Reserve. After a stint here, why not make your way to Durban, the chief seaport of Durban, home to a plethora of unusual and colourful creatures, as well as some warm. Soothing waters safe for swimming and an accompanying golden sandy coast that begs to be bathed on. Here, the opportunity to shop once again arises, but this time in more modern surroundings. Durban makes for a wonderful shopping escapade, as the Indian markets, modern malls and friendly shop assistants enhance your experience, whilst lovely parks and gardens make for a relaxing break after a long day out collecting goodies to take home!

Quickly onto the ‘Friendly City’, Port Elizabeth, and there is the opportunity to take in the sights of the oceanarium and snake house, before heading to the beach for a tan top up, readying you for a tour along what is locally referred to as ‘the Garden Route’ of Knysna, so called for its beautiful floral scenery, of course, and the spectacular wealth of lakes, rivers, lagoons and pristine beaches all along the way. From here you may wish to head to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, where you can take a trailer ride to the top of Western Head to enjoy panoramic views of the town and lagoon, a truly marvellous sight.

Giant Ostriches admittedly may not have been the first thing on your mind when you decided on a visit to South Africa, but none the less, a visit to Oudtshoorn, the centre of the world’s Ostrich farming industry, where you will be guided around an Ostrich farm is an intriguing one. Here, you will be informed on the Ostriches natural habitat and other characteristics by experts that will be more than happy to answer your questions. After this engrossing lesson its onto the world famous limestone Cango Caves. Naturally formed over millions of years, this complex of natural hollows is studied year round by various scientists and tourist groups alike, trying to solve the mysteries of how they were formed whilst also unearthing natural treasures as they go.

Finally, its onto South Africa’s oldest town, Cape Town, which lies at the foot of the monolithic Table Mountain, a hugely imposing natural phenomenon that attracts millions of people every year, willing to pay homage to its magnificence. If you would like to get a better view of the impressive panorama then take advantage of the cable car service that will afford you stunning views of Cape Town, Table Mountain, and possibly your next stops, the Milnerton Lighthouse an ideal spot to take a photo or two and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, where you’ll have time to wander around the many shops, restaurants and craft markets to make any last ditch would be souvenir products and to eat some delightful traditional cuisine, including, unsurprisingly, Ostrich dishes!
