Slovenia Holidays

A peaceful, tranquil country very much in keeping with the ways of medieval Eastern Europe, Slovenia is an ideal getaway for anyone looking for a vacation emphasising historical monuments and outstanding scenery rather than your typical beachside affair.

Military enthusiasts will appreciate the powerful Snežnik Castle, whilst those of you with an interest in religious iconography will revel in the opportunity to view the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, a structure above mere mortal importance.

If, however, you are the type of person that enjoys the outside life and a twist of adventure, then you will feel right at home in the Postojna Cave’s, a labyrinth of natural shelters that attract thousands of visitors every year due to their almost unreachable position, on that makes exploring them that little bit more invigorating.

Come, relax and be enchanted in the Eastern European Jewel of Slovenia!

Ljublijana

The capital city of Slovenia, Ljublijana is home to many of its most essential architectural and naturally appealing landmarks and tourist attractions.

One such attraction is the seemingly endless Postojna Caves, possibly Europe’s best known mountain range reachable only by treacherous yet rewarding mountain climb. Once at the top, though, the panoramic view of the city is breathtaking, whilst the caves themselves seem to wind on forever, endlessly throwing up new beautiful rock formations throughout.

If it’s historical sites that you are on the lookout for, look no further than Prešeren Square, historical and spiritual centre of the capital city. Within the square you will find three river crossings, the religiously important Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and a statue of seminal Slovenian poet France Prešeren. In a way, these factors perfectly summarise the beautiful balance of religion, nature and man made artistry that so defines this ancient, charming East European capital.

Further proof of Ljublijana’s medieval past is prevalent in the omnipresent Ljublijana castle that hangs over the city, projecting its strong stonewalls and ancient carvings onto an adoring public from a sloped hill overseeing the city. Close by, the Old Town Squares (Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg) pass through the very heart of the old town, decorated by an array of appealing baroque and medieval buildings. Many of the city’s most popular cafés, bars and restaurants are located in or around these long squares, which seem to have a permanent electricity in the air thanks to the bustling atmosphere of the mingling locals.

Passing through the city, the river of Ljubljanica cuts a sleepy stream quietly through the landscape, one that can build to a lively rush of water after heavy rain or melting snow. If you get the time, why not try out a boat tour along this tranquil river?

Back on dry land, art lovers will revel in Ljubljana’s Museum of Modern Art. Exhibiting pieces of Avant Garde and even some ‘traditional’ art, there is something for everyone to enjoy here, and if your thirst for knowledge is still not quenched, then the nearby National Gallery will tend to your needs.

Not far from the large city of Postojna, Predjama Castle is the central sight of an area that includes a cluster of caves including the Black, Pivka and Island Caves, all frequently explored by many tourists and locals alike. Close by also is the town of Betalov Spodmol, where Palaeolithic artefacts have been found.

Should you arrive in August, look out for Predjama’s annual medieval tournament, named Erazem Jamski (‘of the Cave’), after an infamous robber knight of the 15th century. Appropriately, Predjama takes on a medieval appearance for the occasion, and the castle grounds are enlivened by costumed figures and tournament events. Be sure to turn up early though, as crowds to this festive event are always extremely large.

Finally, should you wish to indulge in a little of Slovenia’s military past, then take a visit to Snežnik Castle.

Situated at the end of Lož Valley, this magnificent structure has seen imposing structures ranging from Roman times to modern day built on it’s soil, the latest building of note being the superbly preserved Saxon house of Schönburg - Waldenburg, the forest home of past princes of Slovenia. Idyllically situated on the banks of a river, this quaint house served as a hunting and fishing lodge for past Slovenian royalty, and serves as a wonderful testament to the recreational style of the past. As well as the house itself, the adjacent Dormouse Museum is open to the public, exhibiting artefacts such as painting, furniture and even table services used by past Slovenian royal families.
