One of Russia’s most intriguing regions, the impressive Hermann Fortress of Narva stands tall on the path to St. Petersburg, a powerful symbol of Russia’s glorious past, leading to the current economical stronghold and tourist interest centre of St. Petersburg. Here you will find many a Royal Palace, Park, Monument and Square, as well as an extensive amount of wine boulevards and an incredible collection of some 600 bridges crossing over the enchanting River Neva. Be sure to catch a glimpse of the world famous Hermitage.

Moscow. Of course, a trip to Russia simply would not be complete without a trip to the capital city, Moscow.
Home to traditional and modern Russian sights in equal measures, Moscow is beautifully highlighted by the legendary Red Square, the cities proud centrepiece beckons St Basil’s Cathedral. Close by you will find the Theatre Square, home to the world famous Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre, as well as the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and the New Maiden Convent.
After visiting these sights of religious importance it’s onto the historically politically imposing Kremlin, the sight of many a protest and political upheaval in the past as Russia rose steadfastly to a Capitalist administration. Across the square you see such famous sights as the enormous Czar Bell and Cannon, the Palace of the Congress and Offices of State. Further religious artefacts are to be found at the Cathedral Square, site of the Annunciation, Assumption and Archangel Michael cathedrals, three of the Kremlin’s best - known structures of faith.

Away from the main cities, the less obvious but equally fascinating town of Uglich allows visitors to explore a quaint 12th- century styled landscape that includes some stunning architecture and natural views, including the River Volga. Like Moscow, there are plenty of religious icons to explore, including the Cathedral of the Resurrection and Dmitry Blood’s Church.

Continuing in the steps of history, the 1,000 year old city of Yaroslavl, considered to be a pearl in the ‘Golden Ring’ of ancient Russian cities, is home to such sightseeing necessities as the Spassky Monastery and the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Once we have finished here, it’s past the impressive Rybinsk Reservoir on our way to Goritsy and the famous Krill-Belosersk Monastery, a very significant religious structure visited by thousands every year.

Next, its onto Kizhi, an island situated at the edge of Lake Onega, home to several fine examples of 19th-century peasant architecture, including the Transfiguration Church, with its 22 cupolas, and the Museum of Wooden Art; a wonderful collection of rural Russian artefacts, many of which are hundreds of years old. Other sights to look out for include the quaint and peaceful town of Mandrogui, bedded on the River Svir with connections to rivers Onega and Ladoga.
All – in – all, Russia may surprise you. Yes, there are many places of political and religious importance to see and admire in Russia, but, like the country itself, it’s true beauty is beginning to bloom, and the likes of stunning rivers and mountains are becoming just as popular as its more traditional cathedrals, squares and churches.
