Holiday Itinerary
DAY 1: UK - New York.
Fly to New York where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
DAY 2: New York City - Newport - Plymouth.
Take the New England Thruway via New Haven, home of Yale University and New London, then into the tiny state of Rhode Island to Newport, home of the world famous jazz festival and millionaire mansions. Here visit The Breakers, Cornelius Vanderbilt's magnificent Italian palazzo, before heading north into Massachusetts, and the historic seaside port of Plymouth, where the Pilgrim Fathers landed in the Mayflower in 1620.
DAY 3: Plymouth.
Begin the day with a visit to Plimoth Plantation, a living history museum of 17th century Plymouth where costumed interpreters portray past residents of the colony. This afternoon you board a cruise boat and head out to sea for one of the true highlights of your trip - an exciting whale-watching expedition with commentary by a local marine biologist. Keep your eyes peeled, because these Atlantic waters are a prime feeding ground for finback and humpback whales, as well as dolphins. Afterwards, you will visit the historic town of Plymouth and Plymouth Rock, the spot where the Pilgrims landed. The evening is yours to relax or explore more of Plymouth.
DAY 4: Plymouth - Hyannis - Boston.
This morning you visit the Mayflower II and explore a reproduction of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to the New World. We then cross Buzzards Bay to Cape Cod, known for its temperate climate and scenic beauty. Our journey takes us to the port of Hyannis, where we will board an old-time coastal steamer replica to enjoy an unforgettable cruise into Lewis Bay. This afternoon, head for Boston, the 'Cradle of American Liberty', where your evening is free. Why not explore Boston's Chinatown, visit Copley Square or take in a play?
DAY 5: Boston - Ogunquit.
Boston has numerous impressive landmarks which reflect the role the city has played in the history of the United States. Your included sightseeing tour with a local guide, will take you to many of the major sights, including Beacon Hill, the Old North Church, Boston Common, and the Public Gardens. Afterwards there is time to explore Faneuil Hall before travelling to the picture perfect ocean front village of Ogunquit, a haven for writers and artists. In the evening, there's a chance to sample the delicious local fare on our optional lobster bake excursion, including steamed clams, Maine lobster and juicy corn-on-the-cob.
DAY 6: Ogunquit - Lake Winnipesaukee cruise - Shelburne.
Today marvel at New England's autumn splendour as we head north-west through forests ablaze with colour to Lake Winnipesaukee, one of the region's largest and most beautiful stretches of water. Enjoy a cruise across this island-studded lake aboard the historic MS Mount Washington to the resort of Wolfeboro. Your overnight is in Shelburne, where you have a free evening.
DAY 7: Shelburne - Wildcat Mountain - Montpelier - Burlington.
This morning, travel to Wildcat Mountain, where there is time for an optional chairlift ride to the summit, with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and as far north as Quebec. Travelling through glorious rolling countryside, carpeted with colourful autumnal forests, we continue across New Hampshire. Next it's on to Vermont, where the birch, oak and maple leaves form a brilliant kaleidoscope of yellows, browns, oranges and reds. After a stop in Montpelier, Vermont's picturesque capital city, we visit a nearby maple syrup farm. Next we visit Cold Hollow Cider Mill which is one of the top producers of Fresh Apple Cider in all of New England. See how cider is made, take time to wander through the store and sample many of the other goodies produced there.
DAY 8: Burlington - Lake Champlain - Lake Placid.
This morning we drive to the shores of Lake Champlain and board the ferry for the scenic crossing into the state of New York. Driving through the rugged foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, we reach the village of Lake Placid, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along Mirror Lake, or visit the Olympic Skating Centre where you may see future Olympic athletes training.
DAY 9: Lake Placid - Saratoga - Albany area.
This morning there is time to explore on your own, so why not indulge in some souvenir shopping on Main Street? A late lunch in Saratoga, the historic city in Upstate New York. An orientation tour shows off the beautiful Victorian estates, and downtown with tree-lined streets and one-of-a-kind boutiques. There's time to explore Saratoga's charming downtown with its Victorian buildings. Overnight near the historic capital of New York State - Albany.
DAY 10: Albany area - New York - UK.
The final leg of the journey takes you to the airport for your flight to the UK.
DAY 11: Home landing in the UK.
Note: Chosen departure dates are historically the best dates to see the autumn foliage - weather permitting.
