Straddling the banks of the Danube, with no less than seven bridges connecting Buda on the east bank to Pest on the west, this cosmopolitan city brims with sights and a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. Highlights include the fairytale-turreted Fishermen's Bastion, from where you can enjoy stunning views over the cityscape. There is also time to pick up souvenirs such as Budapest's renowned embroidery, porcelain and paprika - the main ingredient of Hungary's national dish, goulash. (B, L, D)

DAY 3: Bratislava.
Tucked into the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, vibrant Bratislava is a treat for the senses. Wander the paved streets of its elegant Old Town to gaze at its 15th-century Town Hall and pretty Mirbach Palace, before admiring the Gothic St Martin's Cathedral, where many Hungarian kings were crowned. (B, L, D)

DAY 4: Vienna.
A full day exploring the wonders of Vienna, once the centre of the mighty Habsburg Empire, lies ahead. Dubbed the 'City of Music', the beauty of Austria's capital inspired some of the world's greatest composers, including Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss and still lifts the souls of modern-day visitors. Today, see the lavish Hofburg Palace, Vienna Opera House, Ringstrasse and spectacular St Stephen's Cathedral, as well as many other sights. Also, shop for souvenirs in the bustling Kärntnerstrasse and sample Austria's rich chocolate cake, Sachertorte, or apple strudel in an authentic coffee house. This evening, enjoy an optional concert in celebration of the city's unique musical heritage. (B, L, D)

DAY 5: Dürnstein - Melk.
Dürnstein is right in the heart of the picturesque Wachau wine-growing region. Time to explore this lovely town, best known for its blue-painted Baroque church and the ruined hilltop castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1193. Next cruise to Melk, where you can enjoy a guided tour today of its glorious Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe's largest monasteries, which dominates the town from its towering hilltop perch above the Danube. (B, L, D)

DAY 6: Linz - Passau.
Sail to Linz, one of Austria's main river ports, from which you can join an optional excursion to the storybook city of Salzburg, taking in its revered 'Sound of Music' sights. Alternatively, continue onto Passau - set at the meeting point of the Inn, Ilz and Danube rivers, to admire its graceful arcades, cobblestone streets and St Stephen's Cathedral, home to the world's largest church organ with its 1,700 pipes. (B, L, D)

DAY 7: Regensburg.
One of Germany's best preserved medieval cities, magnificent Regensburg is a visual and historic feast. See its majestic Town Hall and visit the splendid white and gold Old Chapel. (B, L, D)

DAY 8: Nuremberg.
Time to immerse yourself in this historic city, much of it restored to its original glory after World War II. Today, experience its fabulous Gothic churches, ancient ramparts and elegant patrician houses, and get a glimpse of the toymaking and metalworking that have helped it flourish through the centuries. Before leaving, try the town's fabled, sweet-decorated gingerbread known as Lebkuchen. (B, L, D)
