Altogether a more modern city, Oder is youthful not only in terms of the chic architecture that adorns it, but also in terms of its inhabitants – the majority of the town are aged under 30, a fact that is reflected by the many bars, clubs and cafes that wind through its streets. Nicely intermingled, the old Market Square and the imposing Gothic City Hall make for grand alternative viewing.

Further sites of historical interest can be viewed in the town of Jasna Gora, situated near Czestochowa. Here you will find the town’s monastery, a testament to the Polish’s peoples strong will, as it withstood Swedish forces during the many religious wars of the 17th-century. Nowadays, the area is Internationally renown for its ‘Black Madonna’ statue, which has very much been adopted as the countries national symbol. Another enduring Polish, in fact, International symbol of triumph over adversity but equally s reminder of the bleak side of human history is the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp, a chilling reminder of the Holocaust that even so makes for enduring and enthralling viewing.

Home to a glorious mountain range, Tatra, many say, is the most naturally beautiful city in the whole of Poland. The residence of many Polish kings for hundreds of years, Tatra was also the countries capital for the best part of 500 years. Today’s Tatra is a cultural mecca, with the University of Jagiellonian, St Mary’s Church and the bustling market square all within easy walking distance, making Tatra an ideal city for history buffs and shoppers alike. Of course, overshadowing all below it, the Tatra mountains themselves make for an awe inspiring sight, and, should there be one thing you should partake in during your time in Poland, it’s a guided hike up their steep yet rewarding peaks.
