Another city with some enthralling architecture of an historical interest is Malacca, the anchor point for Malaysia’s seafaring trade – the port is especially known for its spice trade and is characterised by its traditional wooden riverside houses and vibrant open-air markets, filled with friendly traders presenting you with a massive range of exquisite traditional and international goods. After indulging in a stint of bartering and shopping, head up St. Paul’s Hill to enjoy a panoramic views over the city, as well as the amazing Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and colourful Jonkers Street, famed for its antique stalls selling perfect souvenir pieces.
Away from the vivid pace of the market stalls of Jonkers Street and the port, there is the opportunity to explore the enchanting Cameron Highlands, home to the lush green mountains that form the hub of Malaysia’s tea and vegetable growing industries. If you can hear crashing waves, it is likely that the magnificent Iskandar falls are in the vicinity, whilst close by you will likely encounter Malaysian aborigines, who are renowned for the delicate handcrafting skills which produce traditional bamboo blowpipes – certainly another contender for a suitable souvenir. Further natural beauty can be witnessed at the Rose Garden tea plantation and vegetable farm, where you have the chance to indulge in one or two culinary guilty pleasures!

Moving on to the ‘Millionaire’s City’ of Ipoh, we come across the astonishing limestone hand - carved Cave Temples, astonishing pieces of religious sculpture. In nearby Kuala Kangsar, there are many other ornate architectural pieces to keep an eye out for, including the fabulous golden-domed Mosque and the intricate Sultan’s Palace. Leaving the mainland, we cross the longest bridge in Asia, the peerless Penang Bridge, to enter its namesake city, known universally as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ due to its microcosmic reflection of Asia whilst providing endless sightseeing spectacles.
Awaiting you in this premium city are such wonderful sights as ancient Temples, Mosques, knowledgeable antique stores selling bargain Eastern historical artefacts and the extravagantly decorated Khoo Kongsi Chinese clanhouse. A good bet for interesting viewing is the Georgetown area, home to a batik factory and butterfly farm.
Should you want to get away from the city landscape for a while, then a visit to the vast paddy fields in the rice-growing region of Kedah should make for a humbling experience – seeing such fields really gives you a feeling for the rural culture of your average Malaysian and the hard work that is powering the rapidly growing economy. Upwards and onwards, why not then trek through the mountains to Kelantan state and its capital, Kota Bahru, where you will again be allowed the chance to purchase magnificent Malaysian arts and crafts.
